Toshiba Satellite A665-S5176 Review

Toshiba Satellite A665-S5176
It hard to compete with the elite, even a laptop. Most of the cash allowance is obscured by performance-based portable computer, such as the Apple MacBook Pro 15 "(Thunderbolt) ($ 2,199 direct, 4 stars) and the Dell XPS 1915 (Sandy Bridge) ($ 1,785 direct 4 stars), which gives you a high quality design, features and components, but a hefty price.
Toshiba Satellite A665-S5176 ($ 800 street) can not compete with these computers in terms of RAW processing and graphics power, but manages to pull through, attracted by new Intel second-generation Blu-ray, Harman / Kardon that produce excellent sound, and its price, elite systems that can not.

Design
The A665-S5176 has a plastic frame with gray X2 Toshiba Fusion finish, which has a two-colored pattern of waves through the plastic construction. Structure through the palm branches cover and remove dirt and adds a unique visual element. This structural trend stops short of covering all of the laptop, and the edge of the lid and palm rest has a glossy finish instead. This finish does little to hide unsightly fingerprints, but Toshiba sells these shiny surfaces, where the laptop will be most affected.

This structural trend crosses the touchpad so even if it is more subtle. But if you like the feel on your finger is a matter of personal preference - I personally do not like it. Along the top of the touchpad is a group of brilliant to make it easy to find in the dark. multitouch capabilities does the job nicely and adds two-finger scrolling and zoom to your repertoire point-and-click Normal. The two mouse buttons on the bottom edge of the touchpad works well, but which also covered in shiny fingerprint collection.

The Chiclet-style keyboard with raised keys and a glossy finish that matched the plastic frame. The keyboard is complemented by a full-size keyboard digital. My only complaint is available from Toshiba, which defines the framework of a keyboard-inch step with the rest of the keyboard. Some users may actually prefer this set-up, but I find it incoherent and uncomfortable. Along the top edge of the keyboard is a strip Touch media controls let you adjust the volume, start and stop playback and turn Wi-Fi on and off.

Toshiba Satellite A665-S5176 features a 15.6-inch screen and a maximum resolution of 1366 x 768 Although you can find other desktop replacement with better screens they come at a steep premium. Dell XPS 15 (Sandy Bridge) with its 1920-by-1, 080 resolution and True HD RGB LED, a laptop fully loaded with a price tag of $ 1785.

Two Harman / Kardon Premium Sound with Dolby mated Software delivers crisp, clear to the whole volume. They also offer a lot 'of bass response of the system without a built-in sub-woofer. You can also listen to music from the speakers and the rest of the computer is off with features Sleep-and-music from Toshiba.

Features
For a desktop replacement laptop, the Toshiba Satellite A665D-S5175 ($ 799 list, 3 stars) and has a smaller, slower hard drives available. Although a 500 GB 5400 rpm may be suitable for a budget system, it is not enough to compete with larger and faster than 750 GB 7200 rpm disk found on the Dell XPS 15 (Sandy Hook), or 640 hard drive found in the S5175 Satellite A665D. Toshiba, however, protect the drive and, thanks to 3D Guard unit, which senses shock and vibration and reduces the rotation of the hard disk to prevent damage and data loss.

The Portable Blu-ray is a great advantage. At this price, most desktop replacements like the HP Pavilion 3243cl dv6-($ 799 list, 3.5 stars) or even economic Editors' Choice Apple MacBook Pro 15 "(Rayo), include only one unit rewritable DVD. Moreover, while the Blu-ray and DVD, both look great on the laptop screen 720, can also use the HDMI output to connect to an HDTV. offers HDMI output up to 1080p resolution, and improved DVD's cooked, which means that even standard DVD will be better when playing on an HDTV. If you want to connect a second monitor is a VGA output as well.

 Toshiba Satellite A665-S5176

A665-S5176 is a lot of other links and features on board as well. 4 USB 2.0 ports offer a variety of peripheral connections, and you can also download a portable computer equipment off thanks to Toshiba's Sleep-and-Charge. The network is easy to 802.11 Wi-Fi and an Ethernet jack.

Toshiba not hesitate to shovel bloatware, and this laptop has a full load. In addition to the usual software testing as a 30-day trial of Norton Internet Security and Microsoft Office 2001 for beginners, you'll also find a variety of software pre-installed. These links to web page dedicated to places like Amazon, toolbars and browser games. In addition, Toshiba is not less than 27 proprietary programs running the useful range of useless. Anyway, this is enough to justify taking an afternoon to clean the new laptop. Toshiba includes more than bloatware with their laptops, however. Also back up their notebooks with a 1 year limited warranty covering parts and labor.

The A665-S5176 is a second generation of Intel processors. The 2.1 GHz dual-core Intel Core i3-2310M provides extended graphics capabilities in the latest generation of processors, which also has a discrete graphics chip will still be able to play a game of low quality support.

When stacked against cash compensation for other new Intel processor, the Toshiba Satellite A655-S5176 performed well in the i3-Core, CEO of 4990 points and 2.04 points in PCMark Vantage Cinebench R11.5. Comparing the Samsung RC512-S02 was 4.83 in 7201 in Cinebench and PCMark Vantage, but made much more powerful second-generation Core i7 2630QM quad-core processor. His daily tasks, but you'll see a big difference.

When the notebook really shined in the graphics department. Former Intel CPU iterations need a discrete graphics processor to handle 3D games, but the second generation of graphics processors offer substantially improved. The A665-S5176 Product 14.26 frames per second (fps) Crysis with medium settings and 4.51 fps at very high. In our tests another game, Lost Planet 2, we managed 17.6 fps on the environment, but could not run tests on secondary endpoints. Although these results will not impress the competitive players, they are a quantum leap beyond earlier Core i3 systems requiring a separate graphics processor just to run tests.

In 3DMark06, A665-S5176, the revised integrated graphics, made 4,543 points for a medium resolution, settings and native resolution of 2,364 points. The current high-end desktop replacement can easily exceed these results, however, thanks to the more powerful Core i7 processors and dedicated graphics card. For example, the Dell XPS 1915 (Sandy Bridge) will bring these improvements to confound the results with 3DMark 9787 (medium) and 5115 (native). The equipment is necessary to improve the results of an important, though, and that can effectively carry out the Dell XPS 1915 out of price range.
 Toshiba Satellite A665-S5176

The A665-S5176 can also be used for multimedia creation, as indicated by our test photo manipulation Photoshop CS5 and video encoding test parking brake. Pushed in Photoshop in 5 minutes and 34 seconds and ended our 3:09 handbrake test. Certainly, these results pale in comparison with the Dell XPS 15 (Sandy Bridge) (Photoshop CS5 4:06, 2:11 handbrake) and Apple MacBook Pro 15 "(Ray) (Photoshop CS5, at 03:58 Brake Hand 1: 53), but they are sufficient for the occasion foreplay.

The A665-S5176 are also well in our MobileMark 2007 test battery discharge. With a 6-cell (48Wh) battery, which lasted 4 hours 37 minutes, easily long enough to get a job or a movie or two. This score is almost identical at 4:40 of the Apple MacBook Pro 15 "(Rayo). The Dell XPS 15 (Sandy Hook) achieved independence much longer (6:58), but did so with a battery of nearly twice as large (92Wh).

When stacked against the best desktop replacements, such as the Apple MacBook Pro 15 "(Thunderbolt) and the Dell XPS 1915 (Sandy Bridge), Toshiba Satellite A665-S5176 seems a little hunter 'temporarily unable to compete with components of high quality, or the command $ 2000 prices. But when measured mobile shops, as Editors' Choice for the Acer Aspire AS5742-647, A665-S5176 is available to steal, offers the latest components, such as the second generation of Intel processors, Premium Sound, or Blu-ray and an affordable price.
