Will Sony Bloggie 3D bring mainstream to 3D?

I bought a Sony Bloggie 3D last week because I am researching 3D. Vizio gave me a 65-inch 3D TV to help in this research and to give me a screen for the studio I’m building, too, but that will be the point of a future look at 3D. Yesterday I shot video at a [...]

MTM Snap project lets you build your own CNC machine so you can build more stuff

It may not be quite capable enough to let you build your own Weighted Companion Cube, but those looking to try their hand at a DIY CNC milling machine won't likely find many more straightforward options than the MTM Snap. Built by Jonathan Ward of MIT's Center for Bits and Atoms, the machine itself is constructed from some high-density polyethylene parts milled on a ShopBot (which simply snap together as the name suggests), and it's controlled by an Arduino board that lets you operate it from any Mac, Windows or Linux computer. Unfortunately, you can't simply buy a kit and piece it all together, but Jonathan's made all of the plans for building your own available, and says it shouldn't cost you any more than $700 from start to finish. Head on past the break for a video of the finished product in action.

SHIFT CONTENT(AND LINK BUILDING) EFFORTS IN 2011

If you are responsible for the success of a SEO campaign, the process of link building in 2011 may be your toughest challenge yet.

It might also be the most rewarding for your website and its underlying business. Social media?s influence is making the heads of many traditional SEOs spin; and consumers? increasing use of mobile applications is driving many others to consider alternative methods of attracting users. It is time to rethink how link building is approached and make a shift toward a greater focus on consumer engagement in 2011.

There is still very much a place for SEO but success in this arena continues to depend on the number and quality of other websites linking to your site and its content. However, because so many competitors are clamoring for too few positions today, it is becoming increasingly difficult to influence rankings with traditional means. The shift that must happen requires refocusing attention on how content is consumed and to consider how the new means of distribution are impacting SEO.

Make no mistake, link building is work? hard work ? that requires research, patience, testing and, of course, creativity. Balanced portfolios should continue to contain links from social media platforms, directories, blogs and both new and established websites. However, to shore up positions on competitive keywords, emerge ahead of the competition and establish influence in the future, the type and style of content and the relationships we have with those that can aid in its distribution is what must be pursued.

The Year of Hyper-targeted Micro-sites:
Exact-match, keyword-rich domain names have always been a quick and effective way to catapult to the top of the search results pages. This remains the case based on WM?s research on Bing and, consequently, now on Yahoo (not as much on Google anymore). But take the concept a step further this year by expanding and supplementing your existing content focus (scope) to acquire a new audience. For example, if you sell ski equipment, create a micro-site containing content (articles, videos, maps, info graphics) on the best downhill skiing in specific geographic areas. How will this benefit your core business and website? In a few ways but it is primarily in the number of links acquired from sources outside of the core site?s ?normal? audience. Add an ability to expose products or services to a specific market and positioning a brand as thought leaders (not just merchants) to the list of benefits as well.

The Year of Personal Relationship Opportunities:
Giving your social graph the ability to feature and distribute your content (and encouraging them to do so) is important today but success in 2011 will require careful attention to those personal relationships upon which your social graph is built. Let?s return to our ski equipment website for an example. If you have taken the time to create the content suggested above about the best ski runs in certain areas, finding a few bloggers (or social media followers) willing to showcase that content ? and provide a backlink ? can turn personal relationships into linking relationships. Remember that any good relationship requires some give and take ? so plan on participating as much as you publish.

The Year of Content Re-optimization:
What content from one or two years ago (or less) might be modified or updated to include a new slant on an old problem, new data for an old trend or to attract new attention on a forgotten content asset? You might want to review a blog post from 12 months ago and create a new post (cross-linking between the two), relating it to a specific trend today. Or, you might consider turning articles into videos (or vice versa). Content re-optimization means breathing new life into old content. Engaging in the process will help search engines and consumers rediscover the value being provided. Already, 2011 is quickly shaping up into the year of Consumer Engagement SEO ? where the relationships we build with consumers are as important (if not more so) as the relationships we build with other website operators (and their websites) or traditional media. The links and signals from consumers are in every way as valuable as those from traditionalwebsites. Those SEOs who are able to recognize changes to the playing field and can act quickly to compensate for these shifts are positioned to dominate the results pages today and into 2012.

This is the ASUS Padfone

Wow, so our theory and mockup turned out to be pretty much spot on: indeed, the oddly named ASUS Padfone does tuck itself into a shielded docking bay on the back of its companion tablet, and the latter's hinged cover appears to pop up upon releasing the latch. You can also just about make out the two ports inside which are likely to be HDMI and micro-USB -- one for driving the larger display, and the other for taking care of touch input while possibly sipping juice from an extra battery somewhere. Now, what we really like to know is which version of Android will be shipped (if ever) with this split-personality phone -- our money's on Ice Cream Sandwich, given that this flavor will happily cater both phone and tablet form factors later this year. That said, given the uniqueness of this product, ASUS could probably still get away with taking a step back and launch this as a Gingerbread tablet. Well, we shall dig up more answers for y'all tomorrow, and stay tuned for some sweet hands-on time.

TALK NERDY TO ME The lost and found tale of online identity

STAFF COLUMNIST
At the start of the semester, I blogged an image of an ad saying ?penicillin cures gonorrhea in 4 hours? with the added quote, ??And, if you happen to have a really bad hookup, you might need this organic compound the next day.? ?5.12 professor on reasons why you should study organic chemistry.? I knew that many of the people who read my personal blog would appreciate the dorky humor behind the joke. I didn?t expect it to fuel online trolls into releasing my work address, in addition to an incorrect work address for my dad. I also didn?t expect these trolls to misconstrue the quote as my discussing my personal life, let alone as an admission that I?ve contracted gonorrhea. I?ve never contracted gonorrhea ? or any STIs, for that matter ? but as the picture states, it is curable!

Foxconn worker from Chengdu factory commits suicide

Foxconn

Sadly, a 20-year-old male employee at Foxconn (Apple's contract manufacturer for many products) committed suicide Thursday morning, according to a report from the Hong Kong China News Agency (HKCNA) cited by Bloomberg. The worker was reportedly employed at the company's new facility in Chengdu where an explosion killed three workers on May 20.

Further details about Thursday morning's incident are sparse, and the reasons behind the factory worker's suicide are currently unknown. This is at least the 14th publicized death by suicide among Foxconn's workforce since the start of 2010.

Foxconn chairman Terry Gou declined to comment about the incident saying he doesn't know the full details about the apparent suicide. However, last year, Gou said suicides by Foxconn employees were prompted by personal issues rather than tough working conditions in his company's facilities.

Labor groups like China Labor Watch disagree. Foxconn's critics have slammed the Taipei-based company for operating facilities with a sweatshop atmosphere -- an accusation Gou vehemently denies.

In response to last year's suicides and subsequent harsh criticism, Foxconn, which builds electronic products for several other recognizable brands including Sony and Dell, raised wages, slashed overtime, offered counseling, and tried to improve the work-life balance for its more than one million factory workers in China.

Although Foxconn's suicide rate remains markedly lower than China's national average, Thursday morning's death, last Friday's explosion, and protests outside a Foxconn shareholder meeting earlier this month suggest the manufacturer has more work to do to improve employee safety and overall satisfaction.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to the friends and family of the young man who died.

HP expands laptop battery recall, doesn't want you to feel the burn

HP wants to make sure you don't get burned, literally. For the third May in a row, it's issuing another expansion of its voluntary battery recall on laptops produced from July 2007 to May 2008 -- frankly, we're considering a holiday to mark the occasion. May 2009 saw a recall of 70,000 batteries followed by an expansion to cover 15,000 in China, totaling 85,000 affected laptops. It didn't end there though, as further expansion was put in place during May 2010 to cover even more models, and this time around, a sizeable number of lappies have been added to the ever-growing list. About five percent of the models from the aforementioned time frame could have problematic batteries, and HP will be providing replacements for those at risk of getting a little too hot under the collar. If your machine was also part of the previous recalls, HP's saying those should be verified as well, even if you've done so in the past already. The full grid of affected laptops can be perused after the break -- Memorial Day weekend will be full of grilling, but we wouldn't want that to include your skin, okay?

Blackbox Case for iPad 2 is beautiful, unique and tactile

Of all of the bloggers here at TUAW, I probably see more iPad cases than anyone else. I've reviewed both the ridiculous -- a case I refused to write up after it literally ripped apart as I was installing it -- and the sublime. The Blackbox Case for iPad 2 (US$99) is one of the latter, and if you're looking for a unique and beautiful iPad 2 case for yourself or as a gift for a friend, you should consider this product.

I am a person who appreciates the fine details of well-made products, and for that very reason I fell in love with the Blackbox Case the moment I opened the package. Each case comes wrapped in a burlap bag, with a hand-numbered certificate welcoming you to the family attached with twine to the outside. Just opening the case is an experience, with the rough burlap a complete contrast in feel to what's inside the bag.

Within that burlap is an iPad 2 case that works both with and without a Smart Cover. The case is handmade of bamboo, with a felt lining to protect the iPad, a leather strap with a metal snap to restrain the iPad, and a company "brand" burned into the bamboo. A unique ID number is stamped onto the leather strap, and it is the number that is on the certificate that you'll want to keep. There's no manual needed to install this case; you just slide your iPad 2 into the felt-lined slot and snap the strap shut.

First thing women notice about other women is how FAT they are

Never mind the hours spent choosing new clothes, applying make-up and getting your hair just right: if you care what other women think, the priority should be squeezing in your waistline.
That is the first thing your rivals will be looking at when they size you up, research revealed yesterday.
For the study, 2,000 women aged between 18 and 45 were questioned about how they formed first impressions.

Paypal v. Google: a tawdry tale of trade secret misappropriation

Google and its poached Paypal employees got sued for trade secret misappropriation yesterday, but we didn't know the dirty details until now. A peek at PayPal's complaint reveals there's a bit more to the story. Apparently, Paypal and Google were in talks last year to use PayPal for payments in the Android Market. Osama Bedier was in charge of those negotiations for PayPal in October of 2010, when the deal was supposed to close, but was allegedly interviewing for a mobile payment position at Google at the same time (holy conflict of interest, Batman!). The complaint claims that Bedier initially rebuffed El Goog's advances, told PayPal of the job offer and professed that he would stay, but jumped ship a month later (bringing some PayPal coworkers with him) after being recruited by Stephanie Tilenius and the almighty dollar. Once it hired Osama, Google reportedly put the brakes on the PayPal deal and created Google Wallet. Then Google, Bedier, and Tilenius got slapped with a lawsuit. A brief rundown of the legal claims awaits you after the break.

Lenovo IdeaPad K1 tablet hits some online retailers, still not buy-able

Lenovo still hasn't officially confirmed it, but all signs are pointing to an imminent US launch of its Android-based IdeaPad K1 tablet. It just hit the FCC under the "K1" moniker earlier this month, and it's now gotten a full blown listing on Buy.com, complete with specs and some pictures that show off Lenovo's "custom-built Android interface." Those specs include a 10.1-inch display, a Tegra 2 processor (not a Snapdragon as we had seen on the LePad), 32GB of storage, dual cameras (5 megapixel rear and 2 megapixel front-facing), a microSD card slot, a micro HDMI out, and even a SIM card slot -- somewhat notably it's also listed as coming with Netflix pre-installed. While most of those specs seem like a safe bet, others apparently aren't quite set in stone, the listing alternatively mentions both Android 3.0 and Android 3.1, for instance, and both a 1280 x 720 and 1280 x 800 resolution (though the latter seems likely). What's more, while Buy.com isn't providing a price just yet, the tablet has also hit Krex Computers of all places, where it's listed at $510. Hit up the gallery below for a closer look.

TUAW's Daily Mac App: Colorize

Colorize Mac app

We've featured selective color applications before on the Daily Mac App, and today we're going to take a quick look at another -- Colorize.

Colorize caters for the non-artists among us with almost idiot proof usability. To get started you simply drag-and-drop an image of your choosing and let Colorize desaturate it for you. You then re-saturate only the portions of the image you want to highlight using a paint brush-type tool.

You can vary the brush size using a slider, zoom in and out from the tool bar or using pinch-to-zoom, or switch between colorizing and 'uncolor' with nice large buttons on the toolbar. If you make a mistake you can hit the undo button, or save your image in its original size when you're done.

There's not much else to the app, which makes it incredibly simple and easy to use, but if you're looking for a boat load of advanced features, Colorize will disappoint. I also experienced an odd bug when testing the app, in that it wouldn't let me re-saturate the image at maximum zoom -- the brush tool simply didn't work -- but I'm sure that's a bug that can be easily fixed.

Colorize isn't the first selective color app in the Mac App Store, and it won't be the last. If you're a keen artist, then this isn't for you. But for those of us who can't afford Photoshop, or just want a quick and fun tool, this app will do the job.

Colorize is available for US$2.99 from the Mac App Store, but if you want slightly more functionality check out ColorWash, which we featured last week.
